Gentili lettori ho voluto rendere omaggio, con la prima di copertina, e con l' ampio servizio all'interno della rivista, ad uno degli eventi che senza dubbio ha portato Desenzano del Garda al centro dell'attenzione mondiale nel secolo appena conclusosi; un esempio altissimo di progresso, nobiltà e sacrificio quasi irrepetibili: la Scuola d'Alta Velocità". Tutto il mondo ha parlato di questo avvenimento: i quotidiani e mensili più importanti a livello nazionale ed internazionale, gli storici, i politici, il comparto scientifico e tecnologico, che hanno riconosciuto, in quegli anni (1927-1936), che tale Scuola fu un esempio per gli obbiettivi ed i record raggiunti, un banco di prova sul quale si misurò il grado di tecnologia e di progresso scientifico raggiunto dalla nazione nel campo aeronautico. E tutto grazie ad uno stuolo di uomini straordinari che forse, a causa del fatto che la Scuola ebbe vita brillantissima ma breve e, subito dopo, avvenimenti drammatici la posero in ombra, non ricevettero il riconoscimento che spettava loro. Ma niente può essere tolto al valore dell'impresa che nulla ebbe a che vedere con gli intrighi politici del periodo o con l'ipocrisia di chi non ha voluto considerare i valori intrinseci di progresso e di umanità che essa ha rappresentato. Questi risultati permisero un grande balzo in avanti alla tecnica aeronautica e costituirono le basi sulle quali si sviluppò l'aviazione dei tempi moderni. Desenzano dovrà sempre andare fiera di questa "Scuola" e della fama che essa le ha conferito in quegli anni. Fama che a Desenzano ha conferito sicuramente anche uno dei suoi concittadini più sensibili en capaci d'interpretarne l'umanità con tutti i suoi pregi ed i suoi difetti, mi riferisco al poeta Gino Benedetti, già ricordato ampiamente nel n°5 di questa rivista, e a cui sono onorato, insieme al mai dimenticato amico Paolo Conti, di dare l'incarico di aprire questo numero con una sua poesia che spero rappresenti, per tutti voi come lo è stato per me, un inno di forza e di speranza per affrontare il nuovo millennio.

Dear Readers, with the front cover and full report inside, I wished to celebrate one of the events that that undoubtedly focused world attention on Desenzano del Garda in the century that has just come to an end: an exceptional example of progress, nobility and sacrifice - The High Speed School. The whole world talked about this event: major Italian and international newspapers and magazines, historians and politicians, scientists and technicians, who in those years (1927-1936) recognised that the School set a true example with the goals achieved and records beaten, a test bay measuring the degree of technology and scientific progress achieved by the country in the field of aviation. It was all thanks to a team of extraordinary men who, due to the School's brilliant yet short-lived success and followed immediately by the dramatic events that overshadowed it, probably did not receive the recognition they deserved. But nothing can detract from the value of the undertaking, which had nothing to do with the political intrigue of the time or the hipocrisy of those who choose to ignore the intrinsic value of progress and humanity that it represented. These results gave a great boost to aereonautical technology and formed the basis for the development of modern aviation. Desenzano should for ever be proud of its School and the fame brought to the town in those years. Fame which Desenzano undoubtedly brought to one of the most sensitive inhabitants capable of interpreting its humanity with all its advantages and drawbacks. I refer to the poet Gino Benedetti, who was the subject of an article in issue no. 5 of this magazine. I am honoured yo allow him, together with our never-to-be-forgotten Paolo Conti, to open this issue with a poem of his that I hope represents - for all of you as it does for me - a hymn of hope and strength to face up to the challenges of the New Millenium.

Liebe Leser, mit der ersten Seite und einem ausführlichen Bericht in dieser Zeitschrift habe ich einem Ereignis meine Hochachtung zum Ausdruck bringen wollen, das Desenzano del Garda im eben zu Ende gegangenen Jahrhundert in den Mittelpunkt der Weltöffentlichkeit gerückt hat, ein Beispiel fast ohnegleichen für Fortschritt, Edelmut und Opferbereitschaft: die " Hochgeschwindig-keitsschule". Die ganze Welt sprach seinerzeit von dieser Begebenheit. Nationale und internationale Tageszeitungen und Monatsschriften, Geschichtswissenschaftler und Politiker, die wissenschaflich-technologische Abteilung, alle haben in jenen Jahren (1927-1936) anerkannt, dass diese Schule hinsichtlich ihrer Ziele und aufgestellten Rekorde ein Prüfstein war, an dem der erreichte Stand der Technologie und des wissenschaftlichen Fortschritts der Nation auf dem Gebiet der Luftfahrt gemessen wurde. Und dies alles dank einiger aussergewöhnlicher Männer, denen vielleicht nicht die Anerkennung zuteil wurde, die ihnen gebührt hätte. Der Grund hierfür ist wahrscheinlich in der kurzen, wenn auch glorreichen Zeit des Bestehens der Schule und in den dramatischen Ereignissen zu suchen, die sie in den Schatten stellten. Dem Wert des Unternehmens ist jedoch grösste Bedeutung beizumessen, und er ist nicht in Zusammenhang mit politischen Intrigen oder der Heuchelei derjenigen zu sehen, die seinen unschätzbaren Beitrag für den Fortschritt und den menschlichen Einsatz nicht wahrhaben wollen. Die erreichten Resultate brachten die Luftfahrttechnik ein grosses Stück voran und waren die Grundlagen für die moderne Luftfahrt. Desenzano darf das nicht vergessen. Die Stadt hat stets stolz auf diese "Schule" und den Ruhm zu sein, die ihr in jenen Jahren zu Glanz verhalf. Ruhm hat Desenzano auch einer ihrer empfindsamten und ausdrucksstärksten Bürger verliehen, der des Menschen Tugenden und Schwächen in den Mittelpunkt seines Schaffens stellte. Die Rede ist von dem Dichter Gino Benedetti, an den wir schon in Nr. 5 unserer Zeitschrift erinnerten. Zusammen mit dem unvergessenen Freund Paolo Conti ist es mir ein Ehre, dieser Ausgabe eines seiner Gedichte voranzustellen, das - so hoffe ich - ebenso für Sie wie für mich eine Hymne auf die Kraft und die Hoffnung bei der Auseinandersetzung mit dem neuen Millennium sein wird.
